I’m head of UX research at Bloomberg Media and director of BHIVE, a digital innovation lab that designs and builds people-centered media experiences that define the future of news.

Previously,

I’ve worked as a senior design researcher and creative strategist at OPNBX studio, urban researcher at MIT, and community journalist for publications including The Seattle Times, The Oregonian, Reuters and The Cambodia Daily.

About me

I’m a design researcher with a strong focus on early to mid-stage product solutions. My sweet spot is working with cross-functional teams to collaboratively build strategy and prototypes inspired by unmet user needs and compelling insights.

Engaging students of the future, on their terms

How might we provide a digital experience for students that provides a full spectrum of support and engagement? 

The Compass is an open-source suite of online tools that allows students to stay active in school—regardless of time and place—through responsive self-reflection, active project engagement, social learning, and portfolio management. This design is the basis for a digital platform that is part of a high school experience that is being piloted in the summer of 2017 in NYC.

Understanding the motivations and aspirations of today's students

How might we design a high school experience that prepares young people for meaningful, thriving lives? 

This research insights narrative draws from footage taken during a one-month field exploration of what it means to be a student in today's New York City schools. Research activities for this series included in-depth interviews, workshops, and facilitated discussions with a wide net of stakeholders from NYC district, charter and independent schools.  

Identifying audiences for scaling a civic action toolkit

How might we better understand the needs of communities in order to catalyze community participation and action? 

This persona tool was developed in order to optimize and scale a transportation education program to cities around the country. Personas were base on in-person and online community research, including in-depth interviews, surveys, and observational research. This tool provided key audience and design insights used in designing and testing a scalable civic action toolkit for the client. 

 

ELEFANT | BRAND MESSAGING / CSR STRATEGY

Differentiation through social responsibility

How might we disrupt the traditional financial services industry with a story of radical integrity? 

Elefant is a financial services and applied analytics startup that needed a brand identity that would capture a unique company vision and value proposition. Through research and development of a CSR model, we created an engaging visual and verbal approach to introduce Elefant to the world, while setting them apart in an increasingly crowded “fintech” landscape.

 

BLACK GIRLS CODE | RESEARCH +  STRATEGY

Operationalizing culture to scale growth

How might we a capture a breakthrough startup's organizational culture in order to scale for growth? 

Since 2011, Black Girls CODE (BGC) has empowered thousands of girls of color to pursue their interests and futures in technology. And rightfully so, they began experiencing unprecedented growth. As Black Girls Code was rapidly growing on a global scale, I was part of a team brought on to ensure they could maintain the integrity of their impact by enhancing and aligning and solidifying their brand and culture.
