Black Girls Code
How might we a capture a breakthrough startup's organizational culture in order to scale for growth?
Since 2011, Black Girls CODE (BGC) has empowered thousands of girls of color to pursue their interests and futures in technology. And rightfully so, they began experiencing unprecedented growth.
As Black Girls Code was rapidly growing on a global scale, I was part of a team brought on to ensure they could maintain the integrity of their impact by enhancing and aligning and solidifying their brand and culture.
Client: Black Girls Code
Role: Researcher, Content Strategist
Process + Impact
During our research phase, my team interviewed students, families, volunteers, staff and supporters; studied analogous programs and adjacent organizations; and facilitated design workshops to garner input and ideas from the BGC community. Our insights informed the design of three tools, including: a brand strategy that highlights BGC’s unique identity and offerings, a culture code that captures their dynamic spirit and practices and a digital toolkit that equips BGC for sustainable and value-driven growth.
With its new tools, BGC is currently operating 12 chapters and serving over 5,000 girls of color.
